I have some images that are not used anymore. When I tried to delete, it says they are in use and cannot be deleted. However, I do not think they are used anywhere on my website. An example is listed among many others:
http://www.condogta.com/media/3421#overlay-context=content/preconstructions
Can someone tell me how to delete or at least locate where these files are used?
Thank you!

Hi Marlone,
I went into the specific media node you referenced above, and it looks as if that image is associated with four taxonomy tags as shown in this screenshot:
https://skitch.com/e-stacywray/g5c12/edit-image-picasso-paired-3-bedroom-floorplans-page-4.jpg-condogta
If you can delete the images from each of those 4 tagged areas, then you will be able to finally delete the image from your media library.
Let us know how that works out. Thanks!

Hi Stacy,
Thank you for the prompt reply. I deleted the tags but still I cannot delete the file for the same reason. One thing I noticed is that, for those files that I cannot delete, their file names and titles are mismatched. Usually the titles will be defaulted as the file names, right? But for some reason, they are all mismatched. I dont know if it matters in this case.
Looking forward to your reply. Thank you!

Hi Marlone,
Can you specify which files on your site need to be deleted, and or post a screenshot of the files in question?
This will help in the troubleshooting process for bug report purposes. Thanks!
When you uploaded the images to your media library initially, had you renamed them differently and now you're noticing that the titles are incorrect or mismatched?
Thanks for any additional information.

Hi Stacy,
If you can access my media folder, you can see files with "Picasso Floorplans" in their tittles (listed by Updated time). There are 36 files in total. I need to delete those.
For the mismatch of titles and file names, I have never renamed their titles manually after uploading. Everything was by default. Very strange.
Thanks!

Hi Marlone,
Thanks very much for the additional information.
I went ahead and escalated your case to our Engineering Team for further investigation.
I tried to batch delete all 36 image files but received the same errors. I did notice several php errors in your Report Log which I have added to the bug report that we're tracking internally at DG-2660.
Once I have more news for you, I'll be sure to post back here with an update.
Thank you!

Hi Stacy,
I am wondering what status this problem is at now. Is it still being investigated?
Thanks!

Hi Stacy,
I am wondering if you guys are still working on the problem, because I still cannot delete those files. Your help is much appreciated!

Hi Marlone,
Our engineers have looked into this issue and it appears that the images you're having trouble deleting are still actually linked to gallery nodes or pieces of content created within the Gallery content type. Drupal will say that the media file cannot be deleted if the referencing nodes still exists as well.
I have asked if they are able to identify which gallery nodes are still referencing the images so that you are able to go in and delete those nodes, and then you'll be able to remove the images that have been linked to those pieces of content.
The engineers are still reviewing this case, and I'll get back to you when I have more information to share.
Thanks for your patience!

Hi Stacy,
Has there been a resolution to this? I have the same problem. I'm almost out of space and would like to delete unused images.
Thanks!

Hi owayslate,
If the images in question are still referencing a node or piece of content, they first have to be deleted from that content and then you can delete the actual image from your library.
Can you give me a couple examples from your site of images that need to be deleted; however, can you check first that those images are no longer associated with a gallery, or page, or any kind of content?
Thanks very much!

Hi Stacy,
A good example is this set of images:
http://ibclife.drupalgardens.com/sites/ibclife.drupalgardens.com/files/s...
http://ibclife.drupalgardens.com/sites/ibclife.drupalgardens.com/files/s...
http://ibclife.drupalgardens.com/sites/ibclife.drupalgardens.com/files/s...
Other than actually going to each page where I think the image is used and right clicking on view image properties, how else could I know if an image is being used? Is there an easier way? I can only find the _1 file being used. I went to each page where it would be displayed and that is the only one.I can find.
So I thought, OK if an image is being used somewhere on my site, if I try to delete them all, only the unused images will be deleted. So I put a check mark next to them all and clicked delete. Six images that I know ARE being used were deleted! The rest of them stayed. The six that were deleted were more recent images so I'm thinking maybe the older images that are no longer being used are stuck somewhere?
I can give you more examples of files I can't delete if you need them.
Thanks so much for your help Stacy!

Hi Marlone and owayslate,
As of yesterday, the above bug DG-2660 has been resolved with this most recent Gardens release.
Now, when you go to delete an image file and if it is still in use on another node elsewhere on your site, the engineers have added a reference link to the node where the image exists. Simply go to that linked content and remove the image from the image field it was uploaded to. If for some reason you receive an error, just try refreshing your browser and removing it again as it should work.
Owayslate, I just tested this on your site and have provided screenshots that should be useful for both you and Marlone for what to look for when attempting to delete images from your Media Library:
https://skitch.com/e-stacywray/8tk5s/edit-image-africa-inland-missions-hamptons.gif-immanuel-baptist-church (file exists in a node like media/261)
https://skitch.com/e-stacywray/8tk53/delete-image-africa-inland-missions-hamptons.gif-immanuel-baptist-church (notified of link where image exists elsewhere)
https://skitch.com/e-stacywray/8tk59/the-hampton-family-immanuel-baptist-church (taken to node where image still exists)
https://skitch.com/e-stacywray/8tkhe/edit-missions-the-hampton-family-immanuel-baptist-church (remove image from Group Icon field or whatever your image field may be)
Let me know how this works for both of you.
Thanks!

Stacy,
I did everything you said and still can't delete the images. On the page where you edit the content, the file field was blank. I even deleted the content but it still won't delete the images.

Hi owayslate,
Would you mind trying one more thing to see if it works?
Can you try updating your theme to the newest version by going to Admin > Appearance and clicking on the "Preview Update" link in the upper right, and then "Save As"? Once you've applied the theme update, then go ahead and clear your cache by going to Admin > Config > Performance, and then try to delete the media files.
I'd like to just rule that out before reopening the bug report. Thanks very much!

Hi Stacy,
I did everything you said. Updated the theme and cleared the cache. I still can't delete them. Thanks for all your help!

Hi owayslate,
I've reopened, and escalated the original bug report at DG-2660 and included recent screenshots from your site attempting to delete those particular files.
Thanks for your patience. We'll keep everyone posted here.

The same problem still exsites. I cannot delete those files and there is no indication of where the files are used. Stacy, can't you guys just delete those files for us as administrator, instead of taking so long trying to figure out what the problem is? I am sure those files are not used in any page of my website. Even if they are, it doesn't matter to me. Thanks.

Hi Marlone,
I reopened and escalated this issue with our engineers yesterday and I have updated the report with the above recent comments. The files would need to be deleted on the database that your site resides on which only the engineers have access to.
As soon as I have further news to share, I'll post back here.
Thanks for your patience!
