I am creating a site for an organization that will have some content creators and some editors. The role of an editor is to approve content for publication. It appears the only user who can see unpublished content is an admin, however. Am I missing something? Is the only solution to make editors admins? Can I even set it up so there is a user role that does not have the permission to publish own content?

Hi datkins,
You can create a new role called Editor at People > Permissions > Roles then give that role the Administer content permission. That will let them view unpublished content and change the published flag if needed - they'll still be able to publish their own content, though.
Hope that helps. Any questions, please let me know.

Hi George,
Just checking ... there is still no workflow (email notification, approval, rejection, etc.) built into DG, correct? Is workflow on the near-term roadmap and if so, any ETA? This is one of the requirements for a client I'll be pitching to today.
The client also wants an event calendar, which I see has received several requests on the DG Wish List Forum.

You may want to consider the Maestro workflow engine. http://drupal.org/project/maestro
Ofcourse you will need to and get as far as you can in DG, then export the site and install the maestro module to finished up.

Hi janton,
Correct, there's still no full workflow system in Gardens. There will likely be dates and calendars before that is available, though we've been reviewing the options available.
Maestro is an interesting project if you need to export. Workbench also recently became available and is focused on content-based workflows and user experience.

Oh, I should mention our project for workflows is #AN-13243.

Don't suppose a year on you have made any progress with this?

Hi deeson,
Thanks for your input here.
Unfortunately, I don't have an ETA for when this functionality will be available in Gardens. The more votes a feature request receives, the higher up it will move in our priority list.
I've updated the request with your vote and comments, and we're now tracking this project internally at DG-3981.
