A while back Susan MacPhee asked this question...

If a client asked me "how well do Drupal Gardens sites work on mobile phones and PDAs," what would DG say? What would DG's elevator speech be? Is there a Drupal module/theme being considered to sniff out mobile devices and serve up a mobile friendly website?

I have been asked this question a few times recently and have not had a good answer. Is there one?

Thanks, Jeff Locke

Jeff,

Mobile and responsive design are being discussed for the next development of Drupal.

Here's some links from the blog of Dries Buytaert that further outlines this development.

There currently isn't a timetable or other details to release at this time other than what is mentioned in the blog posts above. One option for creating a mobile site is to use a third party application. Acquia has patnered with Mobify to provide such services. An internet search will turn up many others that offer similar services. Mobile detection can be done in a Gardens site through the use of JavaScript.

I'm very excited about what Drupal 8 will be like for us. If anyone wants to help with the Drupal 8 release, please dive in. Here's the link to the Mobile initiative: http://groups.drupal.org/mobile and the whole initiative: http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-initiatives.

PS, I'm very happy the way my sites look on my iPhone. If you use advanced CSS, which I always do, definately check your mobile devices to make sure it still looks good.
