The biggest challenge with this project was the request to pretty much have two sites in one. Here's what I came up with:

I think this has turned out nicely. And a solid example of using the front page as a gateway to the two "sites", but keeping them linked together.
From a design point of view, I tried adding just a little margin on the bottom of the navigation by using Firebug. Just 3px seemed to give a little breathing room between that and the logo banner. Just by eyeballing it, this seems to match the space that you have on the bottom of the logo banner and the content area.
To keep things consistent, you may want to look at tightening up the top margin of the footer region.
Just my 2 cents... take it for what it's worth.
