Search engine optimization

The Search Engine Optimization (SEO) feature, available when you create or edit content, lets you manage URL aliases and automatic URL redirects.

Before you even save your draft, you can see the URL alias that is automatically generated for your content (based on your content's title).

After you publish your content, all future changes of your content's title creates a URL redirect from the previous path to the new path. Your visitors will be properly redirected from old URLs to new URLs as you change the title of your content. The benefit to your users is less "page not found" errors.

You can also list all invalid paths that visitors have tried to access that don't exist and result in a 404 error. These are paths for which you should consider adding a URL redirect.

Accessing SEO settings

  1. The Search Engine Optimization (SEO) vertical tab is located at the bottom of the form and is enabled by default.
  2. The URL settings section lets you manage URL aliases and automatic URL redirects.

Once a redirect is created, it appears in the URL redirects section where you can also see a count of how many times a redirect has been used, when last accessed, and more.

HTML Page Title, Meta tags, Open Graph

The Professional subscription plan or higher supports keywords and meta tags, Open Graph Protocol, and robots directives. You can control how search engines and social sites interpret and represent each content type. For information on these settings, see Optimizing your site for search engines.

Turning off automatic path redirects

If you don't want to use the automatic redirect feature, you can turn it off by completing the following steps:

  1. Go to Configuration > URL redirects.
  2. Go to the Settings tab.
  3. Deselect the Create redirects when published URL aliases are changed box.

Now, when you edit your title on published content, the URL is not automatically redirected.

Managing existing redirects

To manage existing redirects, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Configuration > URL redirects, and then go to the Settings tab.
  2. Select the Default redirect type.
  3. Bulk delete redirects and see which ones are used the most, or when they are used
  4. Click Save configuration.

Your configuration changes are saved.

Listing 404 pages for redirect

You can list all your 404 pages and create redirects. To redirect 404 pages, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Configuration > URL redirects, and then go to the Fix 404 Pages tab.
  2. Examine the list to see if you need to create any redirects.
  3. To create a redirect, go to the List tab and click Add redirect.
  4. Enter the path or alias to redirect from.
  5. Enter the path, alias, or external URL to redirect the link to.
  6. Optionally, add a redirect status in Advanced Options.
  7. Click Save.

You should do this periodically, so that your visitors encounter fewer 404 errors.
